While Steelmade Flat Tops are designed to be compatible with most standard 30" range designs there can be certain models that have dimensions that prevent the Flat Top from fitting correctly. A small percentage of ranges with controls on the front will have cooking areas that are less than 21" deep, front to back. The Flat Top is 20-11/16" deep, front to back (outside dimensions) and requires a minimum of 1/2" of space between the back of the Flat Top and the back of the range for proper airflow and to prevent overheating and potential damage to the range itself.
Never allow any portion of the Flat Top to come into contact with anything, including the range.
The Flat Top becomes very hot during use so it's critical to never allow the Flat Top to come into contact with the back of the range or any other surface other than the cooking grates themselves. Doing so can allow the heat from the Flat Top to be transferred to the range, resulting in damage to your appliance.
Please refer to the illustrations below for more information:
The image above shows a range with adequate spacing behind the Flat Top to prevent overheating and/or damage to the range.
The image above shows a 30" range with a shallow cooking area, front to back, that is too small for the Flat Top to fit properly. While it will technically "fit" on the grates it requires the Flat Top to be pushed all the way to the back which will cause heat to be transferred from the Flat Top to the range, damaging the appliance.
We recommend a minimum of 21" of depth from the front of the cooking area to the back and a minimum of 1/2" air gap between the back of the Flat Top and the back of the for proper fitment and performance.
If you have any questions regarding the fitment of the Flat Top on your particular stove, please send photos to our support team at firstname.lastname@example.org before use.
